Constraints for imagination
During a workshop participants make multiple curiosities – small, conceptual projects – centred around a specific (desired) topic. A range of short assignments (pressure-cooker format) help them in questioning the topic, and finding new interpretations.
在工作坊期间,参与者将利用自己的好奇心创作很多的作品——从一个特定的主题延展的概念性的小项目。在强压下创作出一系列作品的方式,让他们可以提出很多与主题相关的问题,并找到新的传达方式。
Constraints for imagination
Embrace constraints – challenge imagination and interpretation
1st year Master Graphic Design students at Masters AKV|St. Joost
Inspired by the French literature movement OULIPO, the participants searched for ways to embrace constraints in order to challenge imagination and interpretation form both themselves as their public.
Even though OULIPO’s restrictions are made for literature, the ways of thinking are applicable to design as well.
On the first day of the workshop we set the mood; participants wrote rules for each other to pick out a ‘random’ book from the library at AKV|St. Joost. During this 3-day workshop, the goal was to make a sibling (reinterpretation) of this book by applying, re-interpreting and tweaking OULIPO’s rules.
By doing so they searched for new dynamics within design, they created space to be completely free and triggered their own and each other’s imagination. They interacted with their public during both the production as well as the presentation of their work.
At the end of each day they wrote down the most important insights they got during the day. By writing down these insights the students inspired each other and at the same time the workshop was placed in a broader perspective – the insights can be used to also take projects outside of the workshop to a higher level.
With no restrictions regarding the medium of the project and the documentation, students discovered exciting ways to execute rules and to start interaction.
